Stained glass “Apollo. System Copernicus” at the exhibition in London

The stained glass window “Apollo. System Copernicus” – reconstructed based on a project by Stanisław Wyspiański – will be presented at the exhibition devoted to the art of Young Poland at the William Morris Gallery in London.

The exhibition “Young Poland: An Arts and Crafts Movement, 1890-1918” is a joint venture of the National Museum in Krakow, William Morris Gallery, and the Institute of Polish Culture in London. It will be an opportunity for the British audience to encounter the unique works of art and craftsmanship of Young Poland. “Apollo. The Copernicus System” – will be one of them.

In the Stained Glass Museum in Krakow, the disassembling of the work, consisting of 12 sections and tens of thousands of small glasses, began on Tuesday. The stained glass window is over 3 meters high. It would not fit entirely in the London gallery, so it will be presented there without the three smallest and lowest parts, but as the stained glass artist Piotr Ostrowski emphasizes, the work will not lose any of its beauty. For the time of transport, each of the sections will be packed separately and placed in a special box.

“This stained glass window is Wyspiański’s top achievement. Stylistically, it is similar to God the Father,” said Piotr Ostrowski, Director of the Stained Glass Workshop and Museum.

“More than a hundred years after its creation, it is considered the most original work of the early 20th century. By showing Apollo to a wide audience, we can contribute to the promotion of our great master,” he emphasized.
