“Discussion on POLEXIT is being created and nurtured by our opposition” The Prime Minister dispels doubts

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki gave an interview to the BBC World Service. – The true reality is that Poland is a member of the European Union, Poland will stay as a member of the European Union, possible Polexit is completely exaggerated, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki argued in an interview. He added that it was mainly the Polish opposition that talked about leaving the European Union.

“This type of discussion is being created and nurtured by our opposition which is their rights to actually present whatever opinions they want, but the true reality is that Poland is a member of the European Union, Poland will stay as a member of the European Union,” the head of government assured, adding that Poland is the “voice of common sense” in the European Union.

Mateusz Morawiecki pointed out that Poland’s dispute with the European Commission is not about its competencies. According to the Prime Minister, the Commission, by criticizing the changes in the Polish judiciary, goes beyond the powers of the treaty, because the member states host the EU treaty.

“If there are any new competencies to be transferred to the European Union it has to happen through the treaty. And right now, we are confronted with a different situation that the European Commission and the European Court of Justice say that they have these and those competencies, which are not mentioned in the treaty,” the Prime Minister commented.

As assured by the head of government, the aim of the reform of the Polish judiciary is, first of all, to strengthen the independence of the judiciary in comparison to the previous years. He added that before the changes, judges who had accused and sentenced Solidarity activists in the 1980s had ruled in the courts.

During a conversation with BBC Europe reporter Katya Adler, Prime Minister Morawiecki also touched on the migrant crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border and threats from Russia.

“Russia is very good at propaganda and they are increasing their propaganda, these days big time. They are trying to put enormous pressure on the European Union to disintegrate, to disunite all of us. Of course, the immediate perpetrator is Mr Lukashenka and the Minsk regime. But he has his sponsor, his principal. And his principal is in Kremlin,” the Prime Minister said.
