The winner of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia is… Iga Świątek!

Iga Światek won her 28th match in a row and won the Internazionali BNL d’Italia after deafeating Ons Jabeur 6-2, 6-2 in the final!

World No.1 Iga Światek has just won her fifth consecutive Hologic WTA Tour title. She defeated No.7 Ons Jabeur, 6-2, 6-2, and became the winner of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. At the same time, she defended her title in Rome and extended her winning streak to 28 consecutive matches

By winning the tournament, Swiatek defended the title she won last year and also won her fifth successive tournament. She has been unbeaten in her last 28 matches.

Prior to beating Jabeur, Swiatek had defeated Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final and Canadian Bianca Andreescu in the quarter-final.

The final was the fourth time in her career Swiatek had faced Jabeur having beaten her in Washington in 2019 but losing to her last year at Wimbledon and in Cincinnati.

This year, Swiatek has won tournaments in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami and Stuttgart, last year having won in Rome and Adelaide. Her greatest achievement to date is a Grand Slam win at the French Open in 2020.

Her run of 28 undefeated matches is the fourth-longest in women’s tennis since the year 2000 and has been bettered only by Venus Williams (USA, 35 matches undefeated), her sister Serena Williams (34) and Belgium’s Justine Henin (32).

Also, Iga Świątek is the first player since Simona Halep in 2017 to make four WTA 1000 finals in a single season. Earlier, she won in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami.
