    Polish woman in the final of the World Boxing Championships. Oliwia Toborek has achieved silver medal

    Oliwia Toborek advanced to the final of the World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, beating the Australian Jessica Bagley 3:2 in the semi-final of the 81kg class. On Wednesday evening Lidia Fidura (+81kg) also appeared in the semi-final, and her rival was the titled Turkish Sennur Demir.

    According to the Polish Boxing Association, before Toborek only three Polish women had appeared in the finals of WBC – Karolina Michalczuk in 2008 (gold) and 2006 (silver) in 54 kg, Sandra Kruk in 2012 (silver) in 57 kg and Magdalena Wichrowska in 2012 (silver) in 64 kg. 

     

    The 20-year-old athlete of the Warsaw Boxing School, led by Jacek Dymowski, became the European under-22 champion in March, but in weight of +81 kg. In turn, in the 81 kg category, Martyna Jancelewicz triumphed, but she was ruled out of the WBC by injury and was replaced by Toborek almost at the last minute.

     

     

    Toborek won bronze medals at the 2021 World U19 Championships in Kielce and the European U22 Championships in Italy

     

    In the +81 kg category, Toborek won the 2021 bronze medals of the U19 World Championships in Kielce and the European U22 Championships in Italy. In Istanbul, she has fought two fights so far. Earlier, in the quarterfinals, she defeated Romanian Alexandra Petcu 3:0. Fidura also started her participation in the world championships in the quarter-final, when she eliminated Ukrainian Mariya Lovczynska 5:0. 

     

    On Monday, Daria Parada (70 kg) and Aneta Rygielska (66kg) has choked. On Saturday Natalia Rok (48 kg), Sandra Kruk (57 kg) and Agata Kaczmarska (75 kg), and on Sunday Wiktoria Rogalińska (54 kg) were ruled out of WBC.

     

    Women’s boxing world championships have been held irregularly since 2001. Polish women have so far won 11 medals: gold, four silver and six bronze. Four of them, including the only gold one, were won by Michalczuk. However, the White and Reds have not stood on the podium in the last four tournaments.

     

    A record number of 310 athletes from 73 countries are competing in Istanbul. The competitions are held again in 12 weight categories.
