German politician wants to talk to Russia about opening Nord Stream 2

German left-wing politician Klaus Ernst says Germany should talk to Russia about opening Nord Stream 2, even though there is a war going on. All because the post-communist party MP is worried about Germany and calls for an end to Russian sanctions.

Days, weeks, and months go by and Russia is still attacking Ukraine. The politician of the German post-communist Left Party Klaus Ernst believes that even though Russia is killing people in Ukraine, “the federal government in Berlin must now do everything to ensure energy supplies.”

“It is necessary to talk to Russia, despite the war violating international law, about putting Nord Stream 2 into operation for a limited period, if the gas supply cannot be guaranteed in any other way,” Ernst said in an interview for Rheinische Post

“An interruption of the gas supplies could irreversibly damage Germany’s industrial backbone,” he added.

In his view, the measures taken by Economy Minister Robert Habeck will not solve the problem, as “other countries are not able to fully compensate for gas supplies” at a level comparable to those from Russia.

“Energy sanctions do not work (…) On the contrary: energy sanctions benefit Russia (…) The explosion in the prices of raw materials such as oil and gas means that Russia is earning more from energy sales than before,” Ernst said.

As the Left politician argues, “it is immoral to maintain sanctions in this way” because “Russia continues to make good money from its raw materials and our citizens and our economy suffer from a completely wrong sanctions policy.”

“We should only take measures that lead to an end to the war and do not hurt our citizens,” he concluded.
