The anniversary of the historic victory of the Polish national football team against Germany

Polish footballers have only beaten the Germans once. Exactly 8 years ago on October 11, 2014, in the EURO 2016 qualifiers, the team led by Adam Nawałka won 2:0 at the National Stadium against Germany. What’s more, it beat the team that had become World Champions three months earlier.

Tuesday marks exactly eight years since the Polish national football team’s first-ever victory against Germany. In the Euro 2016 qualifiers, the team led by Adam Nawałka defeated Polish western neighbours 2:0 after goals by Arkadiusz Milik and Sebastian Mila. The first goal was assisted by Łukasz Piszczek and the second by Robert Lewandowski.

The victory against Germany at the National Stadium in Warsaw opened the gates wide for the white and red team to advance to the European Championships. At the tournament in France, the Poles performed unexpectedly well. They came out of the group where they competed again with Germany (this time a goalless draw), Northern Ireland and Ukraine (twice 1:0 for Poland).

In the 1/8 final, after a dramatic match ended in penalty kicks, the white and red team eliminated Switzerland to face Portugal in the quarter-finals. Penalty kicks once again decided the result, but this time it was the rivals who were better.
