At the auction “Contemporary Art. The classics of the avant-garde after 1945” in DESA Unicum broke a record that went down in the history of the Polish art market. The painting “Two Married Women” by Andrzej Wróblewski was sold for a record price of PLN 13.44 million, becoming not only the most expensive-sold painting in Poland but also the most expensive-sold work of art on the Polish market.
Wróblewski is one of the most talented painters of the post-war generation, whose work was interrupted by a tragic death. His childhood was during the war. As a fourteen-year-old boy, he witnessed the death of his father, who suffered a myocardial infarction during a German soldiers’ sweep. The echoes of war can be seen most clearly in a series of paintings created in the late 1940s. “Executions” in cold, blue-green, corpse tones, show deformed, fragmented human figures.
At the same time, works in similar colours were created, depicting dead people: “Son and killed mother”, “Mother with a killed son”, “Killed husband”.
On March 23, 1957, he went on a lonely trip to the Tatra Mountains, he was found dead on the road of Oswald Balzer (the route leading to Morskie Oko). He probably had a fit of epilepsy from which he suffered all his life. Apparently, he was found sitting in a natural position under a tree.
