A group of scientists from the Medical University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology and the University of Gdańsk have patented a new method of creating and delivering proteins to the body. This new technology will help patients who suffer from difficult-to-heal wounds.
The leaders of the research groups at the Medical University of Gdańsk as part of the REGENNOVA project are PhD. Arkadiusz Piotrowski from the Chair and Department of Biology and Pharmaceutical Botany (genetic research) and PhD. Michał Pikuła from the Laboratory of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Department of Embryology (Regeneration in vitro studies).
Based on the scientific study, a new generation of biological drugs is to be developed. By expression-cloning vectors the creation and delivery of multi-signal proteins to a place in the body that undergoes regeneration is possible. Then, multisignal proteins placed for example in a wound can directly stimulate the tissue regeneration process or gradually release biologically active peptides.

Within the REGENNOVA project, a total of 11 inventions for the development of new compounds that stimulate tissue regeneration and wound healing have been developed. The innovations have been registered in the respective patent offices. A decision to grant a patent has already been obtained for 7 inventions (6 patents from the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland and 1 patent from the European Patent Office).
