Morawiecki on the new Italian Prime Minister: “It’s an important day for Italy, the EU and NATO”

“We congratulate Giorgia Meloni on becoming PM! It’s an important day for Italy, the EU and NATO. Unprecedented challenges lie ahead of us,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wrote on Twitter.

In a post on Twitter, the head of the Polish government congratulated Giorgia Meloni on becoming Prime Minister of Italy.

“We congratulate Giorgia Meloni on becoming PM! It’s an important day for Italy, the EU and NATO. Unprecedented challenges lie ahead of us that’s why we need determined, courageous leadership which supports enduring values. Today Europe and Poland have just such an ally in Rome,” Prime Minister wrote on Twitter.

The swearing-in of Giorgia Meloni’s government took place at the Presidential Palace in Rome on Saturday. She is Italy’s first-ever female prime minister. Her cabinet was formed less than a month after the parliamentary elections, won by the centre-right bloc led by Meloni’s group, the Italian Brothers.

A ceremony to hand over the power in government to Meloni from incumbent Prime Minister Mario Draghi has been announced for Sunday. This is a symbolic ceremony in which the former Prime Minister hands over the bell to his successor. The first meeting of the government will also take place.

A vote of confidence in the government will take place in both houses of parliament next week.
