A Polish archaeological research project in Old Dongola, Sudan, has made it to the final of the European Research Council (ERC) competition for public engagement with research. It is a project of the Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw.
The project “NAFEER; Working together for the sustainable, heritage-based and community embedded development of Sudan” led by Dr Artur Obłuski, takes part in the ‘Public Engagement with Research Award’ in the “Inspire – public outreach” category. The ERC-funded project of Artur Obluski, PhD, ‘UMMA – Urban Metamorphosis of the community of a Medieval African capital city,’ is being carried out in Old Dongola, Sudan.
The award is presented to ERC grant winners who have demonstrated excellence in engaging communities outside of science during their projects. The main goal of the project is to engage the local community in Sudan to promote archaeological heritage.”
There is also a People’s Choice Award in the prize pool, which will be decided by social media voting – this will run until the day of the ceremony, with the winner announced at the three main awards ceremony on 14 July.
The ERC, set up by the European Union in 2007, is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. It funds creative researchers of any nationality and age, to run projects based across Europe. The ERC offers four core grant schemes: Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants and Synergy Grants. With its additional Proof of Concept Grant scheme, the ERC helps grantees to bridge the gap between their pioneering research and early phases of its commercialisation. (erc.europa.eu)
