In a groundbreaking initiative, researchers from Lublin University of Technology are employing advanced 3D scanning techniques to digitize and preserve ornate liturgical garments dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Professor Jerzy Montusiewicz highlights that many of these vestments, with their historical significance, have been inaccessible to the public until now.
The digitalization process involves multiple technologies, including laser scanning, structural light scanning, and LIDAR. Prof. Montusiewicz emphasizes the importance of achieving the best results, combining methods such as photogrammetry, which utilizes a series of photos to construct spatial models.
The scanning, lasting from minutes to hours, has amassed over 80 GB of data, requiring meticulous processing for the creation of detailed 3D models. The liturgical garments, sourced from the Archdiocesan Museum of Religious Art in Lublin and the Museum of the Catholic University of Lublin John Paul II, will be showcased on the website polskiedziedzictwo3d.pl.
This innovative project not only preserves cultural heritage but also allows virtual exploration, offering viewers the ability to rotate, zoom in, and appreciate intricate details previously unseen.
