Paweł Jabłoński, a PiS MP, expressed his frustration on social media after the government majority rejected his amendment. The proposal aimed to clearly authorize soldiers to use weapons in any instance of border violation. Jabłoński believes this rejection weakens the law, enabling Minister Adam Bodnar to continue arresting soldiers for using weapons at the border.
Amendment’s Intent and Rejection
According to Jabłoński, the amendment would have stripped prosecutors of the ability to charge soldiers, offering them better protection against Bodnar’s special investigative team. It proposed detailed procedures and the principle of proportionality for the use of weapons, ensuring soldiers could act without fearing criminal charges. However, without this change, soldiers remain unprotected by current regulations.
Currently, the law permits weapon use only when the border crossing involves a vehicle, weapon, or dangerous tool. Jabłoński argues that Bodnar’s prosecutors exploit this to pursue soldiers even for warning shots. He sees this as another instance of the ruling coalition’s hypocrisy, claiming they say one thing and do another, especially regarding the protection of Polish soldiers.
Jabłoński’s post calls attention to this issue, urging the public to share the information widely. He underscores the importance of the amendment for the security and morale of soldiers defending Poland’s borders.
