Eight Polish citizens were rescued from the Aegean Sea after their sailboat sank near the island of Levitha, according to Greek news outlet Protothema. The dramatic rescue operation, involving a helicopter, saw the group safely transported to the island of Kos.
The French-flagged sailboat went down approximately 3 nautical miles (about 5.5 kilometers) from Levitha in the Dodecanese archipelago. Strong winds, reaching 7 on the Beaufort scale, were reported in the area at the time.
After boarding a lifeboat, the Poles managed to call for help using the emergency number 112. Greek coast guard units and a navy frigate were dispatched to assist in the rescue. Despite the harrowing ordeal, all passengers were safely brought to shore.
