A proposed 30-day temporary ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia signifies a potential first step toward a fair resolution of the ongoing conflict but is not an indication of freezing hostilities, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha clarified on Tuesday. Sybiha’s remarks came after Ukrainian-American negotiations held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
“The temporary ceasefire is an attempt to pave the way toward a just end to the war,” Sybiha emphasized in a Facebook post. “It clearly demonstrates who is genuinely interested in peace.”
According to a joint statement issued after Tuesday’s meeting, the proposed ceasefire would only take effect upon Russia’s agreement and its commitment to fulfill specific obligations. Ukrainian forces will continue combat operations until such conditions are met, Sybiha noted.
The negotiations also highlighted the importance of involving European partners in peace talks. “Long-term security solutions for Europe cannot be decided without Europe,” Sybiha stated.
Further emphasizing humanitarian concerns, Ukraine stressed the need for the release of prisoners, including civilians, and the return of Ukrainian children forcibly relocated to Russia. The statement marked a clear and principled stance from Kyiv on these matters.
Additionally, Sybiha pointed to the significance of linking the proposed ceasefire with upcoming Ukrainian-American agreements on mineral resources and security guarantees from the United States, aimed at ensuring Ukraine’s long-term prosperity and stability.
