On Wednesday, the European Parliament passed a resolution on strengthening the EU’s defence capabilities. The resolution includes, among other provisions, the recognition of the “Eastern Shield” as a project “aiming at the common security of the Union.” The resolution was adopted with 419 votes in favour and 204 against, with support from representatives of the ruling party.
Polish opposition representatives voted against the amendment concerning the “Eastern Shield.” They have no doubt that its provisions contained wording that directly undermines Poland’s sovereignty. Moreover, they argue that references to the EU’s shared responsibility for financing the project are meaningless.
Today, PiS (Law and Justice) MP Mariusz Błaszczak commented on the adoption of the resolution by the European Parliament.
“The resolution adopted by the European Parliament is an action directed against the United States. It is extremely dangerous; it is an attempt to build NATO without the United States,”
he stated.
He further added that, in his view, the passage of this resolution “closes the door to cooperation with the United States and South Korea.”
Nuclear Weapons in Poland?
Błaszczak also referred to an interview given by President Andrzej Duda to the Financial Times, in which he called on the United States to deploy nuclear weapons on Polish territory as a deterrent against potential Russian aggression.
“This is a good idea because it strengthens the deterrence system and serves as a real deterrent to Putin. […] Work must be done with the American administration, but the problem is that those currently in power—Donald Tusk, Radosław Sikorski, or Bogdan Klich—have no chance of implementing any ideas,”
he asserted.
