The words of the former President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński, which he said in 2008 in Georgia, are being recalled all over the world today in the face of growing tensions in the East. At that time in Tbilisi, the Polish President made a memorable speech. Fourteen years later, a Wall Street Journal reporter quotes them as asking whether Western countries would heed Poland’s warnings, issued both a dozen years ago and today.
Adam O’Neal, the journalist from Wall Street Journal recalled Lech Kaczyński’s speech in light of the tense situation at the Russian-Ukrainian border.
“We are here to express our full solidarity with you,” Poland’s then-President Lech Kaczynski declared in an August 2008 speech in Tbilisi, Georgia. He called on the European Union and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) to meet Russia’s recent invasion of the former Soviet republic with resolute opposition.
“We know perfectly well that while today is time for Georgia, tomorrow it may be for Ukraine, then for the Baltic States, and later, perhaps, for my own country, Poland,” said Lech Kaczyński.
“The prescience of his (Lech Kaczyński – editor’s note) warning in Tbilisi remains unquestionable,” wrote O’Neal.
