Arrest warrant against Putin signed by a Pole

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova. However, there is a discussion in the media as to what triggered Putin more – the fact of the arrest warrant or the Pole who approved it.

“What is going to trigger Putin harder: the fact that the ICC put out an international arrest warrant for him or the fact that the president of the ICC, the judge who signed it, Piotr Hofmański, is Polish,”

    Visegrad 24 wrote on Twitter.

Piotr Józef Hofmański is a Polish legal figure and judge who became President of the International Criminal Court in 2021. He had been a judge of the ICC since 2015 and his three-year term as President began then. Before holding a position with the ICC, Hofmański was a lawyer and counsellor at the Council of Europe. The judges granted the prosecution’s request, finding that there are real grounds to believe that Putin is responsible for war crimes involving the unlawful deportation of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.
