Celebrating 38 Years of Photography at the Museum of the History of Photography in Krakow

MuFo: Krakow’s Hub for Photography and Cultural Heritage

Founded on December 31, 1986, the museum has become a vital part of Krakow’s cultural landscape. Originally formed from the collection of the Krakow Photographic Society, MuFo now boasts an impressive array of historical photographs, including works by iconic Polish photographers like Wojciech Buyko and Jan Bułhak, as well as rare photographic equipment and early cinema tools.

The museum’s diverse collections cover various aspects of photography, from studio portraits and documentary photos to non-professional and journalistic photography. MuFo is also home to a rich library with around 25,000 books, magazines, and archival materials focused on the history of photography. The museum’s commitment to research and education is reflected in its collections of virtual photographs, educational resources, and research materials, making it an important hub for both experts and photography enthusiasts.

From Humble Beginnings to a Modern Photography Landmark

The story of MuFo dates back to 1972, when Władysław Klimczak founded a small museum at the Krakow Photographic Society. Over the years, the museum moved several times, eventually becoming an independent institution in 1986. In the early 1990s, it had to leave its home at the Hetmańska townhouse due to ownership changes, leading to a new location at 16 Józefitów Street. The museum was renamed in 2007 in honor of Walery Rzewuski, and after a major renovation in 2018, it became a modern research and conservation center.

In 2021, MuFo moved into a new headquarters in a historic building on Rakowicka Street, a former Arsenal. This new space is set to host the museum’s long-awaited exhibition, What Makes a Photograph?, the first major exhibition in Poland dedicated to the history of photography. With this new chapter, the museum continues to inspire and educate visitors, keeping the rich tradition of photography alive while embracing the future of the art form. In recognition of its contributions, MuFo was awarded the “Golden Medal – Merit for Polish Photography,” underscoring its importance in the world of photography.
