The Internal Security Agency (ABW) has apprehended an individual who, in collaboration with others posing as representatives of the terrorist organization “Islamic State” and supporting ISIS, planned to carry out a terrorist attack on government buildings in Poland. The arrest took place on June 16, 2023, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
During their official duties, ABW obtained information that an eighteen-year-old Polish citizen intended to conduct a terrorist attack. Towards the end of 2022, he converted to the Islamic faith and drew inspiration from figures such as Osama Bin Laden, Ibrahim Awwad, Abubakr Al-Bahdadi, and Anwar Al-Awlaki. He was influenced by the activities of the “Islamic State” and collected information and materials to construct a suicide bomb belt, with which he planned to carry out an attack on a government building in Poland.
On June 16, 2023, officers from the ABW Delegation in Poznan, Branch Office in Wroclaw, apprehended the suspect and conducted a search of his place of residence, uncovering evidence of the planned crime. During the investigation, the Agency also conducted searches at the residences of individuals who had been in contact with the suspect and possessed knowledge of the planned attack.
The detained Polish citizen has been charged with participation in an organized criminal group intending to commit a terrorist offense. He has also been charged with planning, using explosive materials, to carry out an incident that would endanger the lives or health of many people, or cause significant damage to property. As a preventive measure, upon the prosecutor’s request, the court ordered his temporary detention for a period of three months.
The investigation is being carried out by the ABW Delegation in Poznan, under the supervision of the Wroclaw Branch Office of the Department for Organized Crime and Corruption. The case remains under development.
