    International Archives Day

    Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

International Archives Day is observed on June 9th, recognizing the vital role archives play in society. They provide access to historical events, whether on a global or local scale, documenting significant moments captured in films, photographs, and documents.

    Preserving Historical Significance

Archives hold immense cultural value, exemplified by collections related to events like the Warsaw Uprising. These archives house photographs showcasing the city’s life during the uprising, capturing the resilience of both soldiers and ordinary citizens. They also include historical leaflets issued by the Home Army command, informing about the armed struggle to liberate the capital.

Archives not only allow us to uncover history but also help combat misinformation and myths surrounding significant events or crimes. By providing accurate records and evidence, archives contribute to a clearer understanding of the past.

Polish state archives consist of 30 regional institutions and three central archives: the Main Archive of Ancient Acts, the Archive of Modern Records, and the National Digital Archives. These repositories house a vast collection of approximately 45 million archival units, including photographs, films, recordings, and maps. Notably, the number of archives continues to grow, and anyone interested can explore them online at www.szukajwarchiwach.pl.

The Genesis of International Archives Day

On International Archives Day, many Polish state archives organize Open Days, providing behind-the-scenes tours of their facilities, showcasing valuable exhibits, and offering glimpses into their digitization workshops. Exhibitions, films, and presentations are presented, including archival documents and memorabilia. Workshops on conservation, calligraphy, and genealogy research are also conducted.

International Archives Day serves as a platform to promote global archival resources and emphasize the mission and significance of archives in preserving collective memory. It also offers a unique opportunity for individuals to explore their country’s history, their city, or even their own ancestors.
