The case of Iwona Wieczorek in the X-Files

The disappearance of Iwona Wieczorek is one of the most famous and mysterious cases of its kind in recent years. On the night of 16-17 July 2010, the 19-year-old was partying with friends in a club in Sopot. She unexpectedly got separated from her friends and decided to walk home. She never reached it.

A surveillance camera recorded her at entrance number 63 to the beach in Gdansk’s Jelitkowo for the last time. From this place, Iwona Wieczorek had about 2 km to walk home. To get there, she had to walk through a forest-park area. Here the trace of the girl breaks off.

    A man with a towel

The released footage shows a man with a towel walking behind Iwona Wieczorek on the night of her disappearance from 16 to 17 July 2010. It was he who was recorded by surveillance cameras as he followed the missing woman for almost the entire route. Police have now managed to establish an accurate image of the man.

“Anyone with knowledge of the man from the attached video is asked to contact us at 600 997 213 or via email: wieczorek@policja.gov.pl. Anonymity is guaranteed,”

    police officers wrote on Twitter.

    Unexplained disappearance

Around 300 witnesses were interviewed during the investigation into the 19-year-old’s disappearance, which was discontinued in 2012. Already during the investigation, the beaches and dunes and the coastal strip in the area where she was last seen were searched at least twice. Ponds and sewage manholes, among others, have been checked. Places indicated by clairvoyants who had contacted the police or the missing person’s family were searched.

The case of Iwona Wieczorek’s disappearance is currently being investigated in the so-called Archive X, operating in the Małopolska Regional Department of the Department for Organised Crime and Corruption of the National Public Prosecutor’s Office in Krakow.
