An important meeting between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took place at the Royal Łazienki Park in Warsaw. The main topic of discussion was the issue of security in Europe. Protecting the external borders of the European Union was a priority for both countries, who shared a common vision for the future of the Community.

The meeting took place on the eve of the Vilnius NATO summit, where Poland and Italy were expected to present similar positions on providing strong security guarantees to Ukraine. The politicians emphasised the importance of security in its broadest sense for both countries, holding ongoing political consultations and exchanging experiences in this area.

The protection of the European Union’s external borders was another important topic discussed at the meeting. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is in regular contact with European leaders and recently consulted the Italian Prime Minister by telephone regarding events in the Russian Federation related to the so-called Wagner Group. Protecting the border with Belarus is of utmost importance, as the presence of Wagner members poses a potential security threat on the eastern border of the European Union.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed that the Italian Prime Minister understands perfectly the Polish challenges related to external border security. In the face of new geopolitical threats, it is necessary to strengthen external borders through joint action. Poland and Italy, as the countries with the longest external borders of the European Union – Italy by sea from the Mediterranean Sea, and Poland by land from the Königsberg region with Russia, further with Belarus and Ukraine – agree on the need to effectively protect these borders.

Economic cooperation between Poland and Italy was also discussed at the Prime Ministers’ meeting. Trade between the two countries is growing dynamically and both sides are keen to allow Polish and Italian entrepreneurs to develop freely in the European market.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed the importance of Polish-Italian cooperation and solidarity as a driving force for achieving goals in Europe. Political cooperation between Poland and Italy is strong and both countries share a similar vision of the continent’s development and approach to the European agenda.

The meeting of the Prime Ministers of Poland and Italy at the Royal Lazienki Park was an important step in building ties and cooperation between the two countries. Shared security concerns, the protection of the European Union’s external borders and the development of economic cooperation were the main points of discussion. Poland and Italy are continuing to build their shared vision for the future of the European Union and a strong position on the international stage.
