Polish Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski Named Vice-President of UN’s ECOSOC

On Thursday, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected its new bureau, appointing Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski, Poland’s Permanent Representative to the UN, as Vice-President. Szczerski will serve in this prestigious role until July 2025.

Szczerski’s appointment highlights Poland’s prominent role and aspirations in UN development policy. Sustainable development, alongside peace and security, stands as a vital focus of the UN’s efforts in New York. Ambassador Szczerski noted the significance of Poland’s ability to influence the UN’s development agenda, stating, “We will shape it in line with our ECOSOC membership motto: ‘Developing in solidarity,’ which could become a hallmark of Poland’s policy.”

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Poland to the UN detailed the nation’s priorities within ECOSOC, which include enhancing societal resilience to crises, reducing inequalities, and bolstering global food security.

Robert Rae, the Canadian Ambassador, has been elected as the new President of ECOSOC. The bureau also features representatives from Nepal, Costa Rica, and the African Group, alongside Ambassador Szczerski, ensuring comprehensive representation from all UN regional groups.

ECOSOC is the key UN body coordinating actions towards sustainable development. Its bureau guides ECOSOC’s activities and represents the council in interactions with member states and other UN entities. The council consists of 54 members, elected for three-year terms, with one-third of its membership renewed annually by the General Assembly. Poland was elected to ECOSOC last year for the 2024-2026 term.
