Polish Official: Russian Cyber-Attacks on News Portals Reflect “Despair and Helplessness”

In what is being seen as part of Russia’s ongoing information war, several Polish news portals fell victim to cyber-attacks on Thursday morning. When asked how it was determined that the cyber-attacks originated from Russia, Lewandowski explained that Poland has the capabilities to monitor and track internet activities in real-time. He highlighted that Poland is currently the most frequently targeted country in cyberspace, according to reports from Microsoft. This increased level of attacks can be directly linked to Russia’s actions against Ukraine and Poland’s support for the neighboring country.

While previous cyber-attacks primarily targeted government websites, this recent wave affected popular news portals, indicating a shift in the attackers’ focus. Lewandowski emphasized that targeting information portals is a deliberate tactic employed by Russia in their information war against Poland. He further suggested that these attacks may also stem from a sense of desperation on the part of the perpetrators.

Stanislaw Zaryn, the Commissionaire for Information-Space Security, echoed Lewandowski’s sentiments. Zaryn noted that the hackers’ methods align with Russia’s attempts to disrupt and manipulate Poland through cyber tools, aiming to sow chaos and achieve their information-based objectives.

These cyber-attacks serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges countries face in protecting their online infrastructure and information systems. As technology continues to evolve, so do the tactics employed by malicious actors. It is imperative for governments and organizations to remain vigilant and implement robust cybersecurity measures to mitigate the risks associated with cyber threats.

As Poland continues to grapple with these cyber-attacks, it is clear that a comprehensive and collaborative approach involving international cooperation, intelligence sharing, and advanced cybersecurity strategies will be crucial in countering the growing threat of cyber warfare.
