Record-Breaking September: The Warmest in Over a Century

September 2023 breaks records as the hottest in over a century, highlighting the global climate crisis and raising alarm about rising ocean temperatures.

In a historic meteorological milestone, this year’s September has emerged as the hottest in over a century, with just a week left to go. Grzegorz Walijewski, spokesperson for the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW), declared that there’s virtually no chance of the current September temperatures cooling down.

Data collected by meteorologists has been scrutinized, dating back to the early 20th century. “We are currently experiencing an average temperature that is 3.6 degrees Celsius higher than the norm,” stated Walijewski.

Previously, the warmest September on record was in 1999 when the average temperature exceeded the norm by 2.56 degrees Celsius. Following closely were September 1947 and 2006, with temperatures 2.53 and 2.51 degrees Celsius above the norm, respectively.

“With less than 10 days to go, and considering the forecasts for the upcoming days, it’s highly unlikely that this year’s September will relinquish its top position,” emphasized Walijewski. He also noted that global data from the World Meteorological Organization indicates that this September is on track to be the warmest worldwide.

Additionally, ocean temperatures are also at record highs. This unprecedented warmth raises concerns about climate change and underscores the need for urgent action.
