61 representatives of the world of science supported the reconstruction of the Saxon Palace, Brühl Palace, and tenement houses at Królewska Street in Warsaw. The statement on this matter was sent by the initiator of the initiative – prof. Bartosz Korzeniewski from Adam Mickiewicz University.
The signatories of the declaration were pleased to receive the information about the adoption by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland of the act on the preparation and implementation of investments in the reconstruction of the Saxon Palace, Brühl Palace, and tenement houses at Królewska Street in Warsaw.
“We were very surprised to hear about the voices appearing in the public debate expressing opposition to the plans to restore the historical heritage of the capital while recalling false and potentially misleading arguments about the alleged threats related to the reconstruction of the Saxon Palace: the destruction of the symbolism of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. and the threat to the Saxon Garden,” was underlined.
The signatories remind that the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, created in 1925, was located in the arcades of the Saxon Palace, and according to the formulated guidelines, it was to be “triumphant and joyful”.
“So not as a tomb, but as a ‘monument of glory with an architectural structure’,” the statement explained.
“It is worth paying special attention to the fact that the present form of the monument is only partially authentic and is the result of the post-war cleaning up of debris and securing the damaged arcades of the Saxon Palace colonnade,” it is added.
