3 March as the Day of Polish-Romanian Solidarity

    Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The Polish Sejm and Romanian Parliament have agreed to celebrate 3 March as the Day of Polish-Romanian Solidarity following intergovernmental consultations held in Bucharest on 28 March. The decision was reached at the initiative of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of both countries.

On 3 March 1921, the ‘Convention on the Immunity Covenant between the Republic of Poland and the Kingdom of Romania’ was signed, supplemented by bilateral Guarantee Treaties signed on 26 March 1926 and 15 January 1931. Their purpose was to guarantee security in Central and Eastern Europe in the face of the imperial plans of Bolshevik Russia.

“3 March – Day of Polish-Romanian Solidarity – Communique the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,”

Polish MFA Spokesperson Łukasz Jasina wrote on Twitter.

Poland and Romania have furthered their bond of friendship with an official alliance, described by Marshal Józef Piłsudski as an “alliance of hearts.” This connection has been further strengthened by their shared experience of the oppressive communist regime that followed the Second World War. The two countries now look to the future with the hope of a strong, lasting partnership.

On October 7, 2009, a Strategic Partnership between Poland and Romania was signed by Presidents Lech Kaczyński and Traian Băsescu, cementing the countries’ longstanding alliance. The two nations are reliable allies of the North Atlantic Alliance, as well as close partners in the European Union. As co-chairs of the Bucharest Nine, a NATO-affiliated organization consisting of countries from the eastern flank, and active contributors to the Three Seas Initiative, Poland and Romania demonstrate a renewed commitment to friendship, solidarity, and a common assessment of the threats to European security from the East. This unified stance echoes the relationship between the two countries over a century ago.
