Hilary Majewski can be safely called the father of nineteenth-century architecture in Łódź. On his drawing board, among others, such famous buildings as the Meyer factory – the present Grand Hotel, the majestic Poznański Palace or the Heinzl Palace, which now serves as the city hall. Majewski has completed approximately 546 building designs in Łódź. Looking at the city today, we can see his architectural concept.
Hilary Majewski designed in the style of historicism, which was indeed the demand of his clients. Richly decorated buildings were to show the power and money of their owners. For himself and his family, the architect built a villa with a neo-Renaissance facade at Włókiennicza Street.
Currently, it is undergoing renovation, which, according to the conservators supervising the work, brings some discoveries almost every day. First of all, the polychromes, gilding and stucco ornaments were discovered, which survived despite the division of rooms into tenant’s flats after World War II, which resulted in the devastation of the villa.
