    Traditional Polish poppyseed cake [recipe]

    Makowiec, the poppyseed cake, is a traditional dish on Christmas and Easter tables in Poland. It is a cake made from poppy with the addition of delicacies, orange peel, honey, chocolate or walnuts. The taste should not be too sweet but is considered a dessert for coffee or tea.

    The preparation is not difficult, but it is time-consuming, especially when it comes to grinding the poppy. There are some differences in preparing. For example, in Poland, people usually eat poppyseed strudel, poppyseed cake with crumble, or, what we are going to prepare today, poppyseed cake with apples. 

     

    Ingredients:

    – 25 dag poppy seeds

    – 0.5 kg apples

    – 6 tbsp of semolina 

    – vanilla sugar

    – 2 tsp of baking powder

    – 3⁄4 of a block of butter

    – 6 eggs

    – 7 tbsp of sugar

    – 1 tsp almond oil

     

    Preparation:

    1. Blanch the poppy seeds at the very beginning. Then cool and strain it. 

    2. Grind the poppy seeds twice. 

    3. Cream butter with egg yolk, sugar and vanilla sugar.

    4. Add a teaspoon of poppy seeds during creaming as long as you have a poppy.

    5. Grate the apples on a grater and squeeze the juice.

    6. Add the dry apples to the mixture and continue to cream, gradually adding some semolina and baking powder.

    7. Cream and add a teaspoon of almond oil.

    8. In a separate bowl whisk the egg whites and then add to the prepared mixture.

    9. Mix carefully.

    10. Grease the baking tray with butter and sprinkle with breadcrumbs or semolina.

    11. Bake for about 50 minutes at 180 Celsius degrees.

    12. At the very end, sprinkle the top with walnuts or chocolate. You decide what you like
