From Missionary to Pope: Stunning 1980s Photo of Robert Prevost and John Paul II Surfaces

A photograph featuring Saint John Paul II and Robert Prevost, who was a missionary at the time, has been published online. The image was most likely taken in Peru during the Holy Father’s pilgrimage in the 1980s.

After 7:00 p.m., everything became clear: Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected the new pope, choosing the pontifical name Leo XIV. Congratulations from around the world have begun to pour in, and the faithful are searching for more information about the American cleric. An extraordinary photograph from many years ago has surfaced online.

The photo holds particular significance for Polish Christians. It depicts a young priest, Robert Prevost, greeting Pope John Paul II. According to the internet user who shared the image on social media, it was taken in the 1980s.

The meeting likely took place in Peru. As previously reported, “(Prevost), originally from Chicago, arrived in Peru, where between 1985–1986 and 1988–1998 he served as parish priest, missionary, lecturer, and diocesan official.”

Pope John Paul II, for his part, visited Peru in 1985 and 1988—during the period when Prevost was active there as a missionary.
