45% of Poles waste food; a 2024 report highlights key causes and the importance of reducing waste for sustainability.
A staggering 45% of Poles admit to throwing away food occasionally, according to the 2024 “Don’t Waste Food” report by the Federation of Polish Food Banks. Bread, cold cuts, vegetables, and fruits are the most commonly discarded items.
Key Reasons for Food Waste
Main causes include expiration dates, poor meal planning, and improper storage. Bread tops the list, with two-thirds of respondents discarding it, highlighting its short shelf life and widespread use.
Positive Changes and Initiatives
While food waste remains an issue, the number of people admitting to it has dropped by 11 percentage points since 2023. Efforts by organizations like Food Banks and companies such as Lidl Poland aim to reduce waste through education, discounts, and partnerships with charities.
Raising Awareness
The report, released on World Food Day, emphasizes the social, economic, and environmental impact of food waste. It encourages consumers to treat food as a valuable resource, promoting mindful consumption and sustainability.
