Lack of pact with traffic controllers may lead to cancelled flights

Failure to reach an agreement between the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PAZP) and air traffic control unionists, by Friday, may result in large-scale flight cancellations, an aviation official said on Thursday.

The protest of air traffic controllers at Warsaw’s Chopin Airport is in reaction to the new remuneration system. Of 208 flight controllers working in Warsaw, 170 did not agree to a lower salary. They are demanding higher pay and better working conditions.

Piotr Samson, head of the Civil Aviation Authority (ULC), said he hoped an agreement would be reached by Friday as, otherwise, many flights to and from Poland would have to be cancelled.

He added that if the protest continued beyond Friday, Europe’s Eurocontrol aviation safety authority may decide that parts of Poland’s airspace be controlled by other agencies.
