The mayor of Jastarnia has issued an evacuation order for residents and tourists. On Tuesday, sappers will attempt to remove unexploded ordnance from World War II from the harbour basin. The action is to last from 8 am to 3 pm.
“Given the immediately identified danger related to the planned removal of unexploded ordnance from the port basin in Jastarnia, all persons residing in the area of a part of the town of Jastarnia are required to evacuate on Tuesday by 8 a.m.,” this is the content of the ordinance of the mayor of Jastarnia, Tyberiusz Narkowicz, which has been posted on the office’s website.
Police in Puck informed that they asked residents to secure their flats and property for the time of evacuation. It also indicated that the evacuated area will be secured by patrols.
The unexploded ordnance from World War II is located in the harbour basin in Jastarnia.
As the press spokesman of the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla (8. FOW), Lieutenant Commander Grzegorz Lewandowski told PAP that the shell is located by the shore. “It is unexploded ordnance of Soviet origin from the World War II period, weighing about 250 kilograms,” he explained.
He added that Tuesday’s action will be divided into two stages. In the first stage, divers from the 13th Minesweeper Division Fleet will go into the water and bring the unexploded ordnance ashore.
