The grand opening of the Museum of the Victims of Communism took place on the 8th of June in Washington. It will open to the public on 13 June. The museum was founded on the initiative of the Memorial Foundation for the Victims of Communism. The seat of the Museum is located near the place where the Goddess of Freedom Monument was erected in 2007.

The permanent exhibition of the museum has been divided into three sections and all information was presented in a factual manner. Visitors can watch two films in the museum. The first film tells about the beginnings of communism and the Battle of Warsaw, also known as the Miracle on the Vistula and the second one presents the history of the defense of Europe against communism.

The institution will, on the one hand, commemorate all people who perished under the ideology, and on the other, pursue the freedom of many others still living under regimes hostile to democracy and human rights. It will be an important centre for the exchange of ideas, discussions, and education, and will help stop the spread of this criminal ideology around the world.

“Today, we are living in an independent and democratic country which respects views and beliefs of all citizens. However, the years of the communist rule over Poland have taken their toll. We remember the victims; we remember the damage.”,  said the President of the Institute of National Remembrance, Karol Nawrocki, Ph.D.
