The main factory siren in the Joseph Stalin Poznań Metal Works (ZISPO, then called the Hipolit Cegielski Metal Works) was a signal for workers to start a demonstration against poor wages and deteriorating working conditions in 1956. It was something that the present authorities could not ignore.
The actual number of casualties of the Poznań June 1956 is unknown. The data regarding this tragic events and clashes has been investigated several times. The most recent investigation of the Institute of National Remembrance proves that the figure 58 people died as the outcome of the demonstration. According to Agnieszka Łuczak from polskiemiesiace.ipn.gov.pl
The Poznań workers’ revolt revealed a great aversion of the public to political authorities and regime. The Poznań June has also exposed insufficient legitimation of the communist authorities that were supposedly holding power on behalf of the industrial working class. It was the first mass rebellion of workers and inhabitants of a large town in the history of the PRL, with civilians being fired at from tanks and machine guns.
In silence, they walked out of their factories and marched towards the centre of Poznań for freedom, bread and justice.
