EuroBasket 2022 has made history for Polish basketball. The white and red team reached the best eight on the Old Continent for the first time in a quarter of a century. In the group phase, in which they played in Prague, they defeated the hosts, Israel and the Netherlands, although their clear favourites were only against the latter rival.
The first quarter was still relatively evenly contested, but unbelievable things started to happen in the second quarter. Considered a European mediocrity, the Poles even led 54:31 against the tournament favourite!
The team leader, Mateusz Ponitka, played brilliantly. After two quarters he had 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. He was bravely assisted by Michał Sokołowski, who collected 13 points in that time. The Polish players hit 9/19 three-pointers, defended with passion, counter-attacked and made the game difficult for their rivals.
