Volleyball Women's World Champs: Poles defeated Olympic champions

The Polish women, after a brilliant game, defeated the USA 3:0 in the second phase of the Volleyball World Championships. Thanks to the victory against the Olympic champions, the white and red players are still in the fight for the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

After a tough run-in with the world champions – Serbia, the White-Reds faced the Olympic champions in Łódź yesterday (Oct 5). It seemed that the challenge might overwhelm the Polish volleyball players. The American women quickly built up a several-point lead in the very beginning and, with the score at 10:4, seemed to control the match. The Polish women did not give up, and the rivals seemed to have felt too confident and lost that set.

In the next set, the team led by coach Stefano Lavarini played almost perfectly. The Polish block functioned fantastically, which was an unbreakable barrier for the Olympic champions on many occasions. It was a brilliant performance by the Polish women’s volleyball team.

The great performance of our volleyball players continued in the third – as it soon turned out the last – part of the match. It was a great performance by the Polish volleyball team, undoubtedly the best match in a very long time. What’s interesting, the last time the Polish women’s volleyball team beat the Americans was 12 years ago.

Thanks to the victory against the USA, the Polish team can still advance to the quarter-finals of the World Championships. However, they need victories in their next meetings with the Canadians (Friday) and the Germans (Saturday).

    Poland – USA 3:0 (25:23, 25:20, 25:18)
