Volleyball Women's World Champs: Five sets, great emotions, and the victory

The Polish women’s national volleyball team still has a chance to play in the quarter-finals of the World Championships. In the match against Canada, the Poles showed character, thanks to which they won in a dramatic five-set thriller!

In this match, apart from the opponent, the Polish volleyball players had to cope with a lot of pressure. There is no more room for mistakes in this phase of the tournament, as two wins were needed to take fourth place.

Canada has made a lot of progress recently, as highlighted by coach Stefano Lavarini. The beginning of the match proved it, as Polish volleyball players played quite nervously, although, on the other hand, they could get used to it, because this is how most matches started. However, the Polish players quickly caught the right rhythm and led. The Polish team was motivated and won the first set without any problems.

In the second set, it was not so good anymore, as the efficiency dropped from 38 to 22 per cent, and Canada took advantage of that. Canadian team led from the first actions, playing very well in defence. The Polish women couldn’t find a way to level the score and eventually lost the set.

Canada played very well and Polish volleyball players could not stop them. There was a lack of a leader. The Canadian team had no problems scoring more and more points and their advantage grew until it reached 10 points (21:11). A few minutes later Poland was losing 1:2 in sets.

The fourth set was a horror show. Poland led 4:2, only to lose 4:6 a moment later. The white and red team jumped ahead by four points (13:9), and in the end, it was 20:17, but the Canadians led to a draw at 23:23. Poland won this set with a great amount of luck.

Tie-break started with a huge advantage for the Poles. At the very beginning, it was 5:1 for white-reds and minutes later it was 10:4. Poles were winning almost every action. The match ended with an amazing attack by Magdalena Stysiak.

Today (Oct 8), Poland will play against Germany at 8:30 pm.

    Poland – Canada 3:2 (25:18, 19:25, 16:25, 25:23, 15:5)
