After spending two months in detention, former Chancellery of the Prime Minister (KPRM) official Anna Wójcik was released today. This development clearly displeased Roman Giertych, who took to social media to post a sarcastic remark: “All those in custody who have sick children will surely be released from detention soon, right?”
Release From Custody
In recent days, Telewizja Republika had been highlighting the dramatic situation faced by Anna Wójcik—a mother of a seriously ill child. The prosecutor’s office ultimately decided to lift the pre-trial detention in her case, choosing instead to impose non-custodial preventive measures and setting bail at 400,000 PLN.
While this is a significant amount of money, Joanna Jenerowicz, President of the Niezależne Media Foundation, stepped in and paid the bail on Wójcik’s behalf. Speaking to Monika Borkowska on Telewizja Republika immediately after leaving detention, Wójcik expressed her gratitude:
“I was informed right away—basically, as soon as the door to the detention center opened and my attorney came in—that TV Republika had decided to pay my bail. I will be forever grateful for that (…) In a few hours, I will be with my own son. That is the most important thing for me.”
Giertych’s Criticism
The news that prosecutors decided to release a mother of a gravely ill child from detention did not sit well with Roman Giertych. He commented:
“It was certainly prompted by the fact that there were substantive reasons for release (caring for a sick child) rather than by PiS threats and shouting. So now everyone in custody who has sick children will be leaving detention, right? Because we’re all equal before the law.”
This is not the first time Giertych has taken jabs at Wójcik. At the end of March, he implied that if she were to provide incriminating information, she would likely be freed sooner:
“If she were as smart as Director Tomasz Mraz, we’d have a motion to lift the immunity of the real beneficiary by now, and she could be taking care of her son,”
he wrote in one of his posts.
