Iga Świątek emerged victorious in her match against Lesia Tsurenko, securing a spot in the quarter-finals of the prestigious French Open held at Roland Garros. The contest, however, concluded on a rather disappointing note as the Ukrainian player retired due to illness when Świątek was leading 5-1 in the first set.
Before the encounter, the odds heavily favoured our Polish tennis sensation. Experts and bookmakers alike believed that Tsurenko stood little chance, especially considering their previous encounters on the court. During the Rome tournament earlier this year, Iga had soundly defeated Lesia with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-0.
Iga Dominates Early but Match Cut Short by Tsurenko’s Health Concerns
The match began as expected, with Iga quickly securing a 4-0 lead, displaying remarkable skill and performance right from the start, reminiscent of her previous encounter against Xinyu Wang.
The Ukrainian, however, managed to win her first game but was forced to request a medical timeout due to breathing difficulties, possibly related to a cold. Regrettably, this setback ultimately led to the premature end of the match.
Following another easy victory for Iga in the subsequent game, Tsurenko made the difficult decision to retire from the match due to her illness.
