Securing the Polish-Belarusian Border: A Struggle Against Illegal Migration

    Estimated reading time: 1 minute

In the last 24 hours, 30 foreigners attempted to cross from Belarus into Poland, with nine turning back upon encountering Polish patrols. The Polish Border Guard reported nearly 1,500 illegal border crossing attempts in November, a significant decline from previous years—2,300 in 2022 and a staggering 8,900 in 2021.

    Yearly Overview

Since the beginning of the year, over 25,500 attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border have been recorded. Notably, March and April saw around 2,500 attempts each, while July peaked at 4,000. The decline in attempts during September (just under 1,100) and October (2,000) suggests potential effectiveness in recent border control measures.

To counter illegal migration, Poland invested in a 5.5m steel barrier along 186 km of the border in 2022, complemented by a surveillance system spanning 206 km. Recent developments include a €280 million project funded mainly by the EU, involving a 172 km electronic barrier equipped with 4,500 day-night cameras and thermal imaging devices. The Bug River will also see enhanced security with a similar system.

The Border Guard plans to extend electronic barriers along rivers Swisloch and Istoczanka in 2024, further fortifying the border. Funding for these measures is actively being pursued from EU sources.
