In Katowice, at 11 AM, sirens echoed to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the tragic pacification of the “Wujek” coal mine, where nine miners lost their lives during the early days of martial law.
On the anniversary, Katowice activated sirens for three minutes as part of the “Stop the City” initiative. Residents of the Silesian Voivodeship paid homage to the Wujek miners, remembering the day when tanks breached the mine’s walls just before 11 AM, 41 years ago.
Throughout the day, Katowice hosted various events to honor the Wujek victims. The 11th edition of the “Nine Miners’ Run” took place, involving hundreds of students and teachers. Each team of nine participants chose one of the miners as their race patron.
The main ceremonies commenced with a 1 PM Mass at the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Katowice. Later, a procession to the Cross Monument near the mine marked the focal point of the commemorative events at 2:45 PM. Speeches by Dominik Kolorz and Wojciech Szwed paid tribute, accompanied by wreath-laying and floral offerings.
