Polish Anti-Trust Watchdog Levies Hefty Fines on Cyfrowy Polsat’s TV Arm and Teleaudio Dwa for Misleading Competition Practices

The Polish anti-trust watchdog, UOKiK, has imposed significant fines totaling nearly PLN 10 million (EUR 2.3 million) on Telewizja Polsat, the TV arm of Cyfrowy Polsat, and Teleaudio Dwa. The fines were issued in response to allegations of misleading consumers regarding the rules and costs associated with participating in a competition, as stated in a Thursday press release from the regulatory authority.

The UOKiK decision centers around a contest held by Telewizja Polsat in collaboration with Teleaudio Dwa on New Year’s Eve 2021, where viewers had the opportunity to engage in a text message competition. According to the watchdog’s findings, both the content of the messages and the competition rules were deemed misleading for participants.

Telewizja Polsat is facing a substantial fine of approximately PLN 9.5 million (EUR 2.2 million), while Teleaudio Dwa has been fined around PLN 388,000 (EUR 89,600) in connection with the alleged infractions.

Moreover, the UOKiK ruling mandates that information regarding its decision be conveyed through an audiovisual announcement on Polsat channels and the official websites and social media profiles of both Telewizja Polsat and Teleaudio Dwa.
