President Andrzej Duda commented on the treatment of soldiers detained at the Polish-Belarusian border near Dubicze Cerkiewne. Addressing rumors of harsh measures, he emphasized that the soldiers did not complain about their detention. “None of them reported any issues, neither personally nor through their representatives,” Duda stated.
Discussion with Military Police
President Duda revealed he had extensive discussions with the local commander of the Military Police. While he opposed overly radical measures against the soldiers, he acknowledged the complexity of the situation. “There were exaggerations and rumors about the detention,” Duda added, calling for a thorough investigation to determine if the soldiers might be guilty.
The Military Police detained three soldiers in late March and early April for firing warning shots at approaching migrants. Prosecutors charged two soldiers with exceeding their authority and endangering lives. In response, the defense ministry proposed legal changes to exclude criminal liability for actions under special conditions, addressing inconsistencies in current laws and clarifying the responsible use of force.
Cooperation with Defense Minister
Duda praised his cooperation with Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, despite their different political backgrounds. “We have a good, ongoing contact,” Duda noted, indicating a positive working relationship aimed at ensuring national security and supporting the soldiers on the border.
