Pope Francis Opens Holy Door at Roman Prison in Historic Gesture

Pope Francis made history by symbolically opening the Holy Door at Rebibbia prison in Rome. This unique gesture, part of the Holy Year inaugurated on Christmas Eve and dedicated to hope, marked the first time such an event took place in a prison.

    Hope for All

Speaking to inmates and staff, the Pope emphasized the importance of opening the “doors of the heart.” He expressed that hope is a universal gift, offering encouragement to both those inside and outside the prison walls. “Hope does not disappoint,” Francis declared, highlighting the transformative power of compassion and understanding.

During a Mass attended by approximately 300 inmates and guards, the Pope urged everyone never to lose hope, even in challenging circumstances. He warned against hardening the heart, stressing the need for tenderness and openness, especially in adversity.

The ceremony also saw the participation of Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, further underscoring the significance of the event. Pope Francis’ actions and words continue to inspire a global audience, breaking barriers and bringing light to places often overlooked.
