Significant Decline in Suicide Rates in Poland Over the Last Decade

Poland records its largest suicide rate drop in a decade, reflecting improved prevention strategies and interministerial collaboration.

A Positive Trend in Suicide Reduction
Poland has experienced its largest drop in suicide rates in a decade. According to the Police Headquarters, suicides fell from 6,165 in 2014 to 4,845 in 2024, a 21.4% decrease. Between 2023 and 2024 alone, the decline was 7.4%, with 388 fewer cases. Among children and youth, the reduction was even greater, at 12.4%.

Collaborative Efforts Yield Results
This positive trend reflects advancements in suicide prevention strategies, such as interministerial cooperation and professional standards for handling mental health crises. Dr. Halszka Witkowska of the Polish Suicidology Society highlighted the impact of these initiatives, including practical guidelines for teachers, police, and social workers.

Challenges Among Youth
Despite the overall progress, suicide attempts among youth remain concerning. From 2020 to 2023, attempts among girls rose by 315%, and among boys by 178%. However, the rate of increase has slowed, with a modest 3% rise in 2024.

Efforts continue, with plans to implement new training for family court guardians and staff at rehabilitation centers, aiming to strengthen suicide prevention nationwide.
