Donald Trump plans to meet Ukraine’s Zelensky in Washington and is open to talks with Russia’s Putin. He urges Europe to match U.S. aid and proposes rare earth trade.
Meeting with Zelensky in Washington
U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week in Washington, dismissing the possibility of a European venue. Speaking alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the White House, Trump confirmed that key negotiations would take place in the U.S. capital. When asked about Vice President JD Vance’s role at the Munich Security Conference, Trump emphasized that all significant discussions with Zelensky would be handled in Washington.
Possible Talks with Putin and Ukraine Support
Trump also indicated he is open to speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin, though he did not provide a timeline. He reiterated the U.S. stance that European nations should match American financial contributions to Ukraine, claiming the U.S. has already allocated $300 billion in aid—though his advisor Keith Kellogg cited a lower figure of $170 billion. Additionally, Trump suggested Ukraine should offer rare earth metals in return for American financial support, signaling a potential shift in future aid negotiations.
