The European Commission is seeking to interfere in Poland’s presidential elections, and we fear it may do so in a manner similar to what we are witnessing in Romania, said PiS MEP Adam Bielan during a press conference at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. He added that PiS has submitted an inquiry to the European Commission regarding this issue.
The European Commission Is Not Hiding Its Intentions
EU Commissioner for Digital Affairs Henna Virkkunen stated in an interview with Deutsche Welle that the European Commission is considering organizing a roundtable discussion ahead of Poland’s presidential elections. In a statement to PAP, an EC spokesperson confirmed that Brussels is in contact with Polish authorities.
According to Bielan, the press conference in Strasbourg was held in response to the “scandalous statement” made by the EU Commissioner.
“The Commissioner is a politician who, five years ago, actively supported the campaign of one particular candidate—then and now—Rafał Trzaskowski. She is absolutely biased and completely unreliable when it comes to investigating foreign influences in Poland’s election campaign,” Bielan stated.
He also claimed that there is already evidence of foreign governments and organizations interfering in Poland’s 2023 election process.
“We have information regarding the activities of Russian intelligence services (GRU) aimed at undermining Law and Justice (PiS). Russian agents in Poland actively worked to dissuade Polish citizens from voting for PiS,” he said.
Bielan emphasized that he has proof that “NGOs funded by American and European sources, including organizations linked to George Soros, formally ran so-called voter turnout campaigns, but in reality, they aired advertisements designed to discourage voting for one political option—Law and Justice.”
“We have this rather peculiar coalition of far-left NGOs and Russians working against PiS in 2023. And yet, the European Commission remains silent on this matter,” he added.
“The European Commission Should Be Independent”
PiS MEP Arkadiusz Mularczyk called it unacceptable that Commissioner Virkkunen wants to convene a roundtable on Poland’s elections.
“The European Commission should be independent and should not interfere in the electoral processes of individual countries,” he said. He also noted that PiS has requested the EC to disclose all documents related to this issue.
“The Commissioner previously supported Rafał Trzaskowski in past elections. (…) Today, we see that her interference, or rather her initiatives, are essentially aimed at maintaining the current government in Poland—the ‘December 13 Coalition’—while also supporting the ruling party’s candidate in the upcoming elections,” Mularczyk concluded.
