“George Simion’s party and my party—Law and Justice—are guarantors of stability and development. Together, we can genuinely elevate our countries to a new level and become the engine of our entire European bloc,” stated Mateusz Morawiecki, leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists, during the election rally for George Simion, leader of the AUR party, who is running in the Romanian presidential elections.
On Sunday, Romania’s Central Electoral Commission rejected Călin Georgescu’s presidential candidacy. Previously, elections in which Georgescu secured the highest number of votes in the first round were annulled. Georgescu appealed the Commission’s decision to the Constitutional Court, which, however, upheld the decision as lawful.
Following Georgescu’s disqualification, leaders of the right-wing AUR party and the Party of Young People, George Simion and Anamaria Gavrila, announced their participation in the elections. Simion held an election rally on Friday, receiving the endorsement of Mateusz Morawiecki, head of the European Conservatives and Reformists.
Speaking about Simion, the Law and Justice politician emphasized that Simion acts as a “bridge between European patriots from the right and the left sides of the parliament. My friend Simion distinguishes himself through his stabilizing role—not just in his own country but across Europe,” Morawiecki noted.
“I have visited the United States numerous times with George Simion, where we conducted extensive discussions with the U.S. administration and representatives of the Republican Party. This type of cooperation with the United States is exactly what’s needed in Europe and Romania,” he added.
Referring to the Romanian elections, Morawiecki recalled a statement by U.S. Vice President JD Vance in Munich, stressing that national leaders cannot legitimately govern by censoring electoral opponents or eliminating the opposition.
“We support Romania. Romania is our crucial partner in Central Europe. Poland and Romania must cooperate. George Simion’s party and my party—Law and Justice—are guarantors of stability and development. Together, we can genuinely elevate our countries to a new level and become the engine of our entire European bloc,” Morawiecki concluded.
The Romanian elections will take place on May 4, and following Georgescu’s withdrawal, Simion is now one of the favorites in the first round.
