Attack by Bodnar’s Prosecutors on Poland’s Top Soldier: “They Attached Him to the Investigation and Leaked It to the Media”

Polish media have reported that the prosecution is investigating General Wiesław Kukuła, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces. The case allegedly concerns the purchase of real estate for the Territorial Defense Forces (WOT), which Kukuła previously commanded. Presidential advisor Stanisław Żaryn has commented on the matter, asserting that Kukuła was “forcefully attached” to the investigation and that the actions of Bodnar’s prosecutors are detrimental to Poland and its military.

Investigation Launched by the Prosecutor’s Office

The news of the investigation was first reported by TVN24. In addition to Kukuła, seven high-ranking officers from the logistics units of the Armed Forces, WOT, and the Ministry of National Defense (MON), as well as former Deputy Minister of Defense and current Law and Justice (PiS) senator Wojciech Skurkiewicz, are also under scrutiny.

The case stems from a complaint submitted a month ago to the “illegitimate” National Prosecutor’s Office by the National Revenue Administration. The investigation focuses on alleged overpayment for the WOT headquarters in Nowy Sącz, purchased at the end of 2023. According to TVN24, the military could have acquired the property for 5 million PLN but ended up paying three times that amount.

“They Want to Discredit the Most Important Soldier”

The investigation has sparked widespread discussion online. PiS deputy spokesperson Mateusz Kurzajewski is convinced that the case is simply an attempt to remove an inconvenient military officer. Kukuła served as WOT commander from 2016 to 2022.

“Incredible. Bodnar’s prosecutors have attacked the Chief of the General Staff over the purchase of property for WOT. The problem is that when this purchase was made, Gen. Kukuła was no longer WOT’s commander. This is just an excuse to get rid of a general disliked by the current government,” Kurzajewski wrote on Platform X.

He further accused the current authorities of stalling key defense contracts, halting military recruitment, failing to implement the defense budget, and handing security matters over to Brussels. “Now, in the name of political revenge, they want to discredit the most important soldier in the Polish Armed Forces,” he added.

Was He “Attached” to the Investigation?

Presidential advisor Stanisław Żaryn went even further, accusing the prosecution of deliberately linking Kukuła to the case and leaking the information to the media.

“Unbelievable! At a time of growing threats from Russia, the prosecution is launching an investigation, forcefully attaching the Chief of the General Staff to it, and leaking information to the media to undermine Gen. Wiesław Kukuła’s credibility,” Żaryn wrote.

He emphasized that such actions are “harmful to Poland and our army.” “A tragedy!” he concluded.
